Dhaka Medical College and Hospital

(DMCH) established in 1946. The College began admitting students from this year. In the meantime, Academic classes started on 10 July which is celebrated as "DMC DAY". In the beginning there were no female students, but currently about half of the students are females. Since its establishment, Dhaka Medical College is always playing an innovative starring role in dispersing medical education between young pupils. The hospital attached with the college provides reasonable health care to a massive number of patients through its outdoor, indoor and emergency facilities.
The first principal of this college is Major W. J. Virgin. The committee formed to establish the Dhaka Medical College; Major W. J. Virgin is head of that committee. In the commencement it has only four departments and these are- medicine, surgery, gynecology and otolaryngology (ENT). In the meantime there were no anatomy or physiology departments so the students at first attended those classes at Mitford Medical School which is now the Sir Salimullah Medical College. Later a month, Professor of Anatomy Pashupati Basuand and Professor of Physiology Hiralal Saha joined the Staff. And then Dhaka Medical College and Hospital gets its life.

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital has now 2300 beds. Its nick name is DMC. Now the total students are 1050. The total number of administrative staff is 3406. The website address is:  www.dmc.edu.bd
And it has two museums now. First principal is Major W. J. Virgin and Present principal is Professor Quazi Deen Mohammad. In the liberation war in 1971, Dhaka Medical College played a vital role in the war of independence. Many of Students, nurses, staff, and graduates of DMC were engaged in the battlefield, whereas others endangered their lives to treat the wounded freedom fighters in the hospital. Practically totally the doctors working at DMCH helped the wounded freedom fighters by admitting them under deceitful names.

In the liberation war in 1971, many more students took part in the warfare as liberation fighters. Many of them also war in Dhaka city. Dhaka Medical College and Hospital feel proud for their martyr’s. The students, staffs, doctors are play an important role against the Government of Ayub Khan. They jointly work with Dhaka University also.

Other Activities:


The Dhaka Medical College and Hospital is not only a best quality in education but also in other activities like Computer club, Debating club, Ex-Cadre’s Association, Medicine Club, Rotary Club, Sandhani (Blood, Organ donating charitable organization). Dhaka Medical College Debating Club (DMCDC) is an innovator in Medical College debating history. Dhaka Medical College football team played football in all season as they get leisure. In the year 1989 Dhaka Medical College Alumni Trust was shaped.  Principal and Professor Dr. Wali Ullah was the founder-president of that Alumni Trust. Dhaka Medical College & Hospital is an ancient Medical College & Hospital in Bangladesh. The People of Bangladesh are generally goes to this Hospital for their daily treatment. A modern burnt unit is also available here. Burnt people get treatment here with available medicine. Dhaka Medical College & Hospital established in 1946 when it is in British Colony. Dhaka Medical is the first medical college in Bangladesh.  

A thousand of Doctors are working here in shifting duty. They serve the general people very well equipped tools with there greater mind. A thousand of Staff Nurse are working here day and night shift. Patients take medicine and service free of cost here.
